The Schools
76% of the adult population in Ethiopia is illiterate. We are trying to make a small but important difference in fighting this overwhelming problem by offering free nursery and primary education to over 360 children who would otherwise not have access to education. We currently run two schools (Kindergarten – Grade 5) in one of the poorest areas of Addis Ababa. We have recently rented a lovely new compound that will enable us to expand the schools to include Grades 5,6,7 and 8 over the next two years.
At the beginning of 2009, we launched a lunch programme at both schools. For most children, the school lunch is the most nutritious and important meal they have each day. The programme has had a positive impact on attendance rates, overall health and grades. Additionally, we have noted increased engagement from parents, who, in return for tuition and lunch for their children, must participate in homework assignments. We provide all students with a school uniform, books, extra tuition, lunch, extra curricular activities, a summer programme, mentoring and career advice.
